A baby story

Wow, it has already been three weeks since Annalise was born. I had no idea how hands on she would be during the day. This girl is not a sleeper during the day but thankfully she does sleep for 2-4 hour intervals at night. It's still earlier in the morning and she's asleep so I'm going to try and type out the birth story...

Annalise estimated arrival date was June 22. However, that day came and went without a hint of an oncoming delivery. My first Braxton Hicks came 7 days later on the dawn of June 28. That day I was a little panicky and had that rush of adrenaline that makes you clean the house, pack your bag for the hospital, and make sure everything is in order before a baby comes. Although other than the early morning contraction no other contractions came along on Monday. In order the help me pass the time, Lavenda invited me over to hang out with her that afternoon and do a little shopping at IKEA. By Monday evening, the house had been cleaned and more groceries bought "just in case".

On Tuesday, June 29, at 3am in the morning I started having contractions that came 13 minutes apart. As much as I wanted to wake Jared up and tell him. I also thought I shouldn't since it might be a long labor and he would need his sleep. But as soon as the first alarm went off I was telling him about the contractions. At 9am that morning I was scheduled to see the doctor. The news I got was neutral. Or at least that's how it felt to me. I had finally started to dilate and was somewhere between 2-3. I was told not to hold my breath though because with the contractions that far apart, they may stop all together. If they stopped and the labor didn't progress, I would be induced on July 1 at 12am. Jared let a few people at work know what was going on but I didn't want to jinx the whole thing so I didn't tell anyone.

The contractions stayed at 13 minutes apart all day. I took an hour long walk right before lunch. It was good for passing the time. When Jared got off work at 4pm that day, I convinced him that I needed to climb stairs. We had heard during our birthing class that it was a great tool to progress labor. I would have climb them indefinitely because I wanted it to work so bad. Good thing I have a level headed husband when it comes to me. After an hour he convinced me that I need to conserve some energy and we needed to walk the mile back home. We enjoyed a cup of Skinny Dip chocolate yogurt on the way back.

When arrived back at the house my contractions started coming closer together at 8 minutes apart. Yay! Climbing stairs really does work. About an hour later our friends Kim and Phil dropped by. They got to see when the labor was 7 minutes apart and really starting to make me stop and breath during them. I used the birthing ball for the majority of the time while I was at home. Dancing with Jared also seemed to help ease the pain and help me focus on breathing. Without a doubt breathing is the key to getting through the contractions. Jared was the perfect partner. He would suggest new positions, keep me focused on breathing, and then help me relax between the contractions.

At 2am the contractions were about 3-4 minutes apart. You can go to the hospital when they are 5 minutes apart for an hour. We wanted to labor at home as long as possible though. The hospital is only 4 blocks away so distance and time getting there wasn't a factor. By the time the contractions came at 2am I was already getting tired and feeling ready to go to the hospital but we needed a sign. That sign came with my water breaking at 2:30am. Of course my water broke when Jared just happened to go put all of our stuff in the car. He was so sweet. He took the water drenched clothes and washed them off before we headed to the car. While we were walking to the car, I had a contraction and labored on the birthing ball in the middle of the sidewalk. Jared actually took a picture. It was a memorable moment.

It's 3am when we check into the hospital. Our room could almost pass for an over sized hotel room. For the first hour, I labored in the hot tub which was great. The hardest part about being at the hospital and laboring is that they would have me lay in bed every so often for what seemed like 30 minutes to monitor the baby. I felt like every time I had lay on the bed the contractions would get farther apart and yet feel more intense. It was miserable and really wore me out more than anything else. The nurse got in touch with my dr. and the dr. told them to put me on pitocin (a drug that quickens labor) at 7am. At 6am the nurse checked me and I had only dilated to 4. It was a breaking point for me. I was so tired (even falling asleep between contractions). Also once I was on the pitocin I would be bed ridden for sure. So I did what the majority of women have done before me and called for the epidural. I have no regrets. I honestly went as long as I could before getting the epidural. Jared was extremely worn out too. While I was getting the epidural, I had two contractions and my legs were shaking like crazy. Jared was holding one hand and my nurse was holding the other. At last the epidural was in and taped like mad to my back and the numbness started to take over.

At 7am there was a shift change with the nurses. I have to say that I think I had the perfect nurse for laboring and the perfect nurse for delivery. They really made the whole hospital experience a positive one. I expected to labor in numbness until that afternoon. But when Jen came to check on me at 11am I had dilated from 4 to 10 in just 4 short hours. Short because I was sleeping that whole time. Hallelujah! Jared had left the hospital in order to take our dog out. He walked back into the room just as Jen was telling me to call him.

For the delivery, I had two helpers; Jared and Kim. I had asked Kim before if she wanted to witness the birth. She didn't know they would put her to work and have her hold one leg as Jared held the other all the while I was pushing. I loved the delivery part. I couldn't feel a thing so why wouldn't I? haha. I asked for a mirror and Jen brought in a huge mirror so I could see the birth. It was amazing! The mirror helped me to push more effectively. It was incredible to see the progress. Here again they had to tell me when to push because I couldn't feel it. Jared was beside me counting and making sure I pushed for the right amount of time. So half of my pushing was done with my nurse Jen. The last half with the dr. on call that day. It took 45 minutes total but honestly felt so much shorter. The last image I have is of her head popping out, pushing half a second, and them placing my beautiful baby girl on my chest.

We had 2 plus hours admiring our little Annalise before they put the eye drops in her eyes. Even then, they did it in our room under a warmer. So she never left our side. After I nursed her for the first time and things had quieted down. Jared had his own kangaroo bonding time with her. Kangarooing is a term they use for skin to skin time with baby to help with bonding process and to get babies to nurse. I'm sure there are other benefits to kangarooing as well. We still use it three weeks later to help calm her stomach. One detail I would hate to leave out is how enamored I was at her cute little baby bottom. It was the cutest thing in my hand.

She's growing and changing everyday. We have had a few eating issues. We think she has a sensitive stomach. For now I'm cutting out dairy so hopefully that will help. I think in a few more days we'll be able to know for sure if its the dairy upsetting her stomach. For most of this I've written with one hand as she sleeps in my arms. But as long as she's getting the sleep she needs I'm happy. I hate seeing little dark circles around her eyes. Other than that things are going well. Jared's great at making her copy his smile. I've yet to catch it on camera but they are very sweet moments. She loves being walked around, taking baths in her tummy tub, and laying on her changing table looking at a white wall and black lamp pole. Jared jokingly says I walked too much with her when I was pregnant because she doesn't like to be still.

KIM+PHIL photo

On June 30 Annalise Lydia Ray was born. She weighed 7.7 lbs and was 20 inches long. Things are going great so far. My hands have been full as I get the hang of breastfeeding and getting her weight up to par. Which as of today the doctor was very happy with her weight gain since Sunday. I will try to post when I can but I imagine the next few weeks that post will be a little inconsistent. You will probably be seeing updated baby pictures more than anything and the baby story.

Aren't those baby Ugg boots just the cutest! Her Gigi (Jared's mom) brought them from Australia. Jared's parents are in the States right now and currently in Portland for the next few days. Yay!

Hanging out

Baby Ray is still hanging out and enjoying the comforts of the womb. In spite of the torturous waiting Jared and I filled our weekend up with fun stuff around Portland. We finally went to the Saturday Farmer's Market. I was in heaven with all that fresh fruit and vegetables. When we were living in Dallas, we went to Shakespeare in the park and were thrilled to learn that Portland has one too! The only thing missing from our picnic was a glass of wine. Theater on the lawn and wine just seem to go together. We also got to explore more of Washington Park and all the beautiful roses in the garden there. So, if labor doesn't start on its own by Wednesday. They will induce on July 1st. Either way, sometime this week, we'll have a new addition to the family!

Friday night me and Jared enjoyed the beautiful summer evening stroll to the Portland Art Museum for their first "Free Fourth Friday Night" of the summer. The biggest perk of living in uptown Portland is the ease of walking around here. I think I walked a total 6-7 miles yesterday! That fact is kind of funny to me (especially being pregnant and overdue). We only got around to viewing the works in Building1. By the time we finished there, I didn't have the energy to go through the modern art in Building 2 and walk back home. So we grabbed a bite to eat from a local food cart and made our way back home with the summer breeze in our face.

This morning I met with a bride getting married in September over an iced passion tea from Starbucks. I can't wait to get my hands in her gorgeous hair and do her wedding makeup! I just love September weddings.

Annalise is still not here so today I'm giving myself a pedicure, one toe at a time. The OPI nail polish I bought is pink and called 'Your a pisa work'. I think I bought it for the name.

Hair color and Pureology

Well the official due date has come and gone, still our baby girl isn't making any signs of wanting to join us yet. And yes we are trying everything to induce labor naturally. So today's plan to keep my spirits high is to color my hair. Before I color my hair, I desperately need some new shampoo. I'm going to a salon wholesale store to pick up a bottle of Pureology. All their shampoos are 100% vegan, has zero sulfate, and uses an antifade complex.

I'm actually going to try their Dandruff Scalp Cure shampoo. I have chronic psoriasis so maybe this will help calm it for a little while and be good for my color. In my long experience with psoriasis, I'll find a shampoo to work but it only does the job for a month or two before I become immune to it and have to find another shampoo. The cycle is never ending. Wish me luck!

Update: I had no idea Pureology was so expensive, $19 a bottle at wholesale price! I expect a huge difference in performance.

These cute little prints by The Paper Boat would be an adorable addition to the nursery corner. And so appropriate for living in Portland. The second print (pet cloud) uses the same colors that are dominant in the nursery. I still want to get some pictures on the wall behind the crib but other than that I'm happy with the way the nursery corner has turned out. Updated pictures of the nursery corner to come in a few weeks.

I apologize for my lack of updates last week. I'll do my best to post this week. My mind is a little preoccupied with the impending birth. She's officially due tomorrow but that seems highly unlikely. Thanks for stopping by!

Kim+Phil photography were so sweet and came to do these maternity photos in our Portland neighborhood. I really wanted these photos to reflect who we are as an expecting couple in love. They did a great job at capturing that vision. When I see maternity pictures I always want to know how far along she is. So for those of you like me, I'm almost 38 weeks along in these pictures (40 weeks is the official due date). I can't wait to look back at these pictures in 5, 18, 30 years from now and remember this past year in our life and how God has sustained us.

Peonies

I'm obsessing over peonies. Every time I go for a stroll in our neighborhood, walk past a local flower shop or Whole Foods I'm ogling these flowers. When I lived in China, I would see paintings of peonies everywhere but I don't remember seeing them up close and personal. Now I get to admire them all the time. Peonies were even used in the floral editorial shoot. I don't know about you but beautiful things in nature make me happy.

These pictures are so dreamy. Lavenda captured Hanna's beauty and the light so well. Rebecca Westby's styling abilities are amazing. The clothes on Hanna are actually in Rebecca's private closet and she hand crafted the floral head pieces. For me the head pieces add the perfect touch in this editorial shoot. Of course, I'm thrilled about how her makeup and hair came out too!

So I hope your week is starting off on a good note. It was a really busy weekend for me. On Saturday I got stuck in traffic for at least 2 hours. I still don't know why it was so backed up. That evening we met with Kim+Phil and did a couple's maternity shoot! Sunday morning we headed out very early to Bend, OR to hang out with Jared's coworkers and family. We also had fun playing disc golf. Yesterday was spent at doctors offices, getting new tires for our car and grocery shopping. I'm definitely looking forward to a few days propping my swollen feet up.

Rain Boots

Those black and white polka dot rain boots are by Nomad are calling my name. A couple weekends ago Jared's Portland Aussie Rules Football team played against Seattle's team. All the women from Seattle were wearing cute rain boots. I'm not exaggerating either. But I hardly ever see anyone from Portland wearing rain boots, even though it rains nearly as much. It just goes to show you that sometimes fashion trends only hit in certain cities.

A behind the scenes look at a recent floral editorial shoot I did makeup and hair for with photographer Lavenda Memory, stylist Rebecca Westby, model Hanna Thomsen, assistant Nick Wilson. We started off at Lavenda's place with hair and makeup. Then headed over to the McMenamins Edgefield grounds for the backdrop.

Restyling hair and makeup can be a challenge in between wardrobe changes. You have to do it fast, efficiently and creatively. Sometimes hair just doesn't do what you want it to and you have to come up with something else on the fly. Of course with Lavenda and Rebecca's eyes it made it a lot easier to achieve the looks we needed. In the last picture, you can see that the hair and makeup changes took place from the back of an SUV. I can't wait to share the gorgeous pictures with you sometime soon!

I'm a little later than usual getting this out today. It's been raining for the last two weeks so I wanted to make sure I got in a long walk today without it pouring on me.

Flour Tortillas

Jared and I have taken to making our own flour tortillas. We find a huge satisfaction in making things from scratch especially when they taste better than store bought tortillas. I don't know how I lived in China for so many years and didn't make more things from scratch. The recipe is simple but you should plan for it to take 1 hour total from beginning to end. Letting them sit is key. We found out the hard way that it makes all the difference. I'm sure you can substitute 1 cup of whole wheat flour for one cup of all-purpose flour too. Here's the recipe for chewy flour tortillas.

Yesterday we had our 34 week check up and this rug finally arrived much to my delight. The rug looks just as I imagined in front of the crib. Now just a few more touches and we'll be finished with the nursery corner. Just in time for baby!

I've been meaning to post some of these pictures from a recent stylized engagement shoot Kim+Phil did at Wallace Park. I wasn't there to do the makeup. It was the same day as the Vancouver, BC makeup show. But the pictures are just too cute to pass up. Pictures can say a lot about a couple.

I briefly got to meet Petrel and Jacob about a week ago and Mandi from Champagne Wedding and Events who coordinated the shoot. It was a fun night of bowling. Petrel is also the owner of The Wedding Cottage, a boutique that provides "everything but the dress."

Are you chomping at the bit to get out to the beach or lake this summer? These beautiful pictures taken by Lavenda were located along the Columbia river. It was a cold and windy day but Kayleen was a true professional and dove right in (wardrobe changes and all). There was one point were I had to change up her makeup. We were both shaking but we did like Tim Gunn and made it work! I always have the hardest time deciding which pictures to post and then which one is my absolute favorite. Do you have a favorite?

I think you're going to enjoy today's pictures from Kim+Phil. The hair and makeup on Portland's newest model, Sarah Pine, was done by yours truly. Sarah hails Las Vegas as her hometown. Before the shoot, Kim+Phil had sent her some inspiration photos. She went as far as to buy suspenders and leggings to help get the look. That's true dedication to the profession. Sarah's skin is one of the lightest I've worked with but luckily I had foundation to match. Kim wanted to play up her pale skin with black smoky eyes. I love the contrast and how it works with the overall style. The first four are film pictures and the last two are digital pictures.

The children's collection by flora and henry is so precious! Even though the main stores are based in Seattle and New York they have quite the European flare. Just so you know, I'm obsessing all things that put children and European style together. For me, the look is timeless. The current photographer for flora and henry is Kate Baldwin, who is also based out of Seattle. I love how she captured the children and clothes in these photographs. The little boy with the coffee mug cracks me up.

Gabby is LavendaSeniors newest senior rep. She loves makeup and was all about having her makeup done. For some people it's really hard to have someone else be near their eyes but she was totally relaxed. It was actually pouring while I was doing her makeup but everything cleared up just in time for us to head outdoors. I was digging her colorful wardrobe and that scarf! Lavenda captured the sun beautifully behind Gabby while she was wearing her sunglasses. Getting senior portraits done is a highlight of many high school students and I'm thrilled to be a part of their experience.

This bangle is completely made of recycled paper and the cardboard ring of a finished duct tape roll.

I'm drooling over this robin's egg blue purse from portemone. The fabric is divine.

Jared and I have done so much better at recycling since moving to Portland. They make it so convenient here. The very popular Poppytalk blog has made some new recycling bin labels for you to download. Now there'll never a confusion of where the glass goes.

Shelby is a senior rep for LavendaSeniors. A senior rep is the new and very casual way for photographers to advertise their services in high schools. She was so much fun and photogenic. I love all her "faces". If you were to get a look behind the scenes you'd see her proud dad taking pictures of her too! Shelby normally doesn't wear very much makeup so I gave her a makeover that was very natural. Of course if you saw her in person that day you might say otherwise. Isn't it crazy what the camera sees and what we see?

HD makeup vs. everyday makeup

I hope you are having a terrific Tuesday! The IMATS in Vancouver, B.C. was a great experience and I gained some more makeup knowledge in the process. It was a gorgeous day in Vancouver, I can't wait to go back there on vacation. Without a doubt, one of my top favorite international cities.

Now on to today's topic. Many people wonder what the difference is between HD makeup and regular makeup. And why should I hire a professional makeup artist who uses HD makeup for my wedding or senior portraits? The picture above shows you what happens when you combine an awesome photographer and a top of the line camera with everyday makeup. You can literally see the makeup and the coverage isn't invisible as it should be. HD makeup creates a soft focus effect for the camera, covers imperfections, and can withstand bright and harsh lighting. It also means less work for a photographer in editing the images. I hope this visual was helpful in showing you the difference.

The International Makeup Artist Trade Show in Vancouver, B.C. is here! I have been looking forward to this since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, I can only attend on Sunday. This is my first makeup show so I'm not sure what to expect exactly but it looks like a full schedule with lots of big names in the industry speaking.

We're going to head out of Portland around 4am and make a long day of it. It's a straight 5.5 hour drive so I'm sure we're going to need to plan on at least 6.5 hours. Jared's going to go hiking while I'm taking classes. We went to Vancouver for our honeymoon and loved it. It's such a vibrant and unique city. The outdoor activities that surround Vancouver make it even better. Wish we could stay longer.

Call me crazy but I have always liked BIG hair. Does that make me a true Southern belle? The easiest way to get big hair to last is by going the pouf route. The pouf looks very different depending on how you style your hair. And yes, it can be over-the-top. I have images of a woman whose all over pouf enthralled me as a kid and not in a good way. We all make hair mistakes but is big hair and poufs to be considered one of them? If styled right, I think not.

I just love what Le Papier Studio does with silhouettes. They do a stunning job at customizing personal pictures into priceless works of art. Their lockets are my favorite but the decals, pillows, prints, stationary, journals, calendars and cuff links are just as nice.

Have you noticed that espadrilles are back with a vengeance? I have always liked them for their diversity. To me they are the casual yet nice shoe no matter which style you choose. Happy Easter Weekend! I know for some of you it's already Saturday. Sorry for being MIA yesterday. I left the house really early work on a film project doing hair and makeup and then made it just in time for our birthing class. It was after 9pm when I got home. It was a really fun day and I can't wait to share the music video with you later!

On to today's pictures. Lavenda Memory is starting a new business just focusing on senior portraits. I will be on board doing the makeup and occasionally hair. You may remember Lavenda from this shoot. Lavenda's vision is that girl's will have a "day in the life of a model" experience. I love how Rachel's pictures came out from last weekend. The makeup is subtle. The only makeup difference you will see in the pictures is lipstick color. Don't you love the pink lipstick with her plaid shirt and the blue background? Pat and Mallory are getting married in August. They were college sweethearts and have been together for the last four years! So sweet. These are the some pictures from their engagement shoot this past weekend with Kim+Phil photography. I met up with Mallory at Pat's house, there I did her hair and makeup. Her skin was so perfect and she was already so beautiful. I used colors that she normally uses and she chose how she wanted her hair styled. I love the end results!

For all you ladies, do you embrace shapewear? The right piece definitely has a slimming and toning effect no matter what your size. I would think more women tend to wear them under form fitting clothes (a wedding dress, night out on the town, business suit). Natural Deodorant

For over the past year, I have been searching for natural deodorant. Specifically, one with no aluminum. I've tried almost every brand you can think of. Their scent was either too strong or they just didn't do the job. You can cross most deodorants off the list after the first or second try. Hey, I even went without deodorant for a few weeks. Jared, my very loving husband, said it wasn't working. I reluctantly went back to using a trial size regular deodorant. Again it didn't take long for my underarms to start itching like mad.

But it looks like over a year of searching may have finally come to an end with Arm&Hammer unscented natural deodorant. So far so good. It says unscented but does smell slightly of orange peel. The price point is good too ($2-$3). I'll try it for another month and then give you a more accurate review.

Good morning dear friends! Did you get your free pastry at Starbucks this morning? I enjoyed the brisk morning air with a cup of hot tea and an apple fritter. Great way to start the day! My normal go-to Starbucks pastry is an apple bran muffin but they were already out of those. I would seriously try almost anything that has cinnamon in it. Someone behind me in line was going on and on about the pumpkin scone. What's your favorite Starbucks pastry? Do tell!

I came across this incredible independent prescription eye wear company called Warby Parker over the weekend. If you wear prescription lenses than you know how expensive they are. Well, Warby Parker offers the frames AND lenses for just $95 plus free shipping. How cool is that! They will even send you lenses to try on with free return shipping! On top of that, they donate a pair free for every pair they sell. I think they have a great story about how they started and how they operate.

Their frames are vintage inspired (so they may not suit everyone). But I definitely think they're worth taking a look at. It's easy to upload your own picture and "try on" different pairs. I think I've narrowed mined down to two pairs. I recently had an terrible terrible experience the "high end" eye wear store here in Portland. Thus, I'm very open to any company selling frames and lenses at low cost but trying to keep the quality high. At $95 there's not much to loose.

This Spring line by Kate Spade has me all giddy inside. I love all the pretty colors and the way each outfit tells a different story. Every bride wants her wedding dress to be uniquely her. It must say a little about your sense of style and what you feel absolutely beautiful in. An idea of what feature you want to accentuate is a good place to start. Do do love your waist, ankles, shoulders, arms, face, neck, backside, chest? I guess the list could keep going but you get the point. I think color and length are also important aspects to consider. Lastly, don't forget your price range. 24 weeks and the BellaBand

Here I am, at 24 weeks, standing in front of the crib my mom got for us. The lighting in our apartment is really awful for taking pictures. On top of that my makeup is pretty bare so it doesn't help any. Oh well.

So, I can still wear my pre-pregnancy pants thanks to the BellaBand. Actually, it's more useful than I thought it would be. I've always had to wear a belt with my pants which is impossible now since I can't button them. But the band does a better job at keeping my pants up than a belt ever did! Crazy! I can see why so many people love them and how useful they will be post baby. Now, I need to find a good pair of workout pants (these are a challenge for me to find even when I'm not pregnant).

How do you feel about hair accessories? I think they're super cute. I'm guilty of wearing the bands like you would a hat on a bad hair day. Overall, you definitely have to wear with confidence since they're still not the norm.

However, at times they just translate better in photography rather than in life. For example, the garland of flowers in the top picture just won't work for anyone as a street style; but it's perfect for the picture with her hair and stylized wardrobe. Don't you agree? Oh, and I do love hair accessories on brides. So chic, modern and beautiful for pictures!

Wishing I owned a few more hair accessories.

Birds and Rain

I love the sound of birds singing on a rainy morning. It makes me want to buy a bright rain coat and embrace the rain. This cute pink raincoat would do the trick for me. Yesterday, I had a scary little fall and my whole right side is so sore today. Lucky for me there were no serious injuries. Are you seeing tights too? My prediction, we're going to be seeing more tights this Spring. Will you be wearing them? I'm in between. They can look cute and hip with the right outfit. Shorter skirts are my preference. Worn wrong it just looks like you're stuck in the past. A very fine line indeed. My other issue with tights is how they cut me off and then poof an exaggerated muffin top appears. The only way I've been able to prevent this is wearing them just under my bra and feeling like a stuffed bird all day. Hmmm. I can't decide.

Wild Fig Designs

Ok, so I've got fashion and growing belly on the brain. It could be because I had a check up this morning. I just found out that Heidi Klum has just released two new maternity lines! I think every woman has Heidi envy. She glows during pregnancy and gets in perfect shape afterwards.

Her Lavish line looks like clothes you see her wear on Project Runway; they range from $68-$550. The Loved line is more casual but still really stylish and range from $17-$40. I have avoided buying any real maternity items and probably will until absolutely necessary. But I'm thinking that dress from Loved will probably be number one on my list when that time comes. My heart beats dresses!

Hot in Portland!

It is always a joy doing hair and makeup! Yesterday was no exception. For this shoot, I played around with some contouring and highlighting around Eryka's beautiful face. I went heavy on the bottom eyeliner and choose to do no eyeliner on the top lid. The hair in the top pictures is pinned under to make her appear to have a shorter bob. For the fashion underwear photographs, inspired by Calvin Klein, her hair was made wavy using a straightening iron.

Working with such great photographers like KIM+PHIL and model Eryka makes it so hard to choose just a few pictures. So today in the spirit of Chinese New Year, enjoy the eye candy!

HD foundation-make up for ever

Make Up For Ever HD Foundation is a favorite among many pro makeup artists. It's easy to tell why. The end result is near flawless complexion when professionally photographed. It's full coverage without looking caked on. This would be also be something you would wear for your wedding, prom, or other special event where you are being professionally photographed and want to look your absolute best.

This has been my staple foundation product on the majority of my shoots. I've actually found that the color #118 works on most Caucasians with fair-medium skin tones. With a price tag of $40 it has been money well spent. I still have my eyes open for other great HD foundations but they will be tested against a fierce competitor.

Weekend Makeup-mascara

Last weekend, I mentioned that lip gloss was #1 on my weekend makeup must have. In very close second is mascara. I need mascara to make my eyes look open and awake. My favorite right now is Maybelline's Define-A-Lash lengthening mascara. I never get clumps and it lengthens just right for my lashes. Oh, and I always wear any mascara in very black.

Madison is such a cutie! I just love her red hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. It was fun visiting with her and her mom,Cindy, during the photo shoot with Michael Andrus. Michael was his usual great self. This was my first teenager to do makeup and hair for on a set. The makeup is more on the pink and natural side to bring out her fabulous features. My favorite element is the top french braid. It has been showing up all over the runways lately and I was dying to try it out. Madison was the perfect model for this style.

Vancouver High Key Shoot

For the last two Saturdays, I've been working with Michael Andrus and learning all about high key photography. He's really great with the models and you can tell he loves his job. As the hair and makeup artist I tried to play up her eyes, lips, and beautiful red hair. The model is Lacie Eastlick who has a very cool job in Experimental Biology. The wardrobe for this shoot was a vintage 1920's flapper dress that worked perfectly!

Portland Baby, girl or boy?

It's official, we're having a baby girl! Her name is Annalise Lydia Ray.

It was incredible to see how much the baby has grown since week 13. Today she is 19 weeks 6 days. We had Five Guys Burgers to celebrate. It's crazy how much food I can eat these days! After lunch, we went to check out all the little girl clothes at Washington Square. Such sweetness. The book on my wish list now is "Happiest Baby on the Block". Have you read it? I've heard it's a lifesaver (or should I say sleep saver).

weekend makeup item

I hope your Friday is starting off fabulously! This morning I was thinking about one weekend makeup item I think carries the most punch. My first item would be clear lip gloss. If I got to choose a second, it would be mascara. Which brings me to a quick makeup review. I've been using N.Y.C. liquid lip shine (Clear & Shiny) in several shoots lately and really like it. I've even worn it myself. Pros: It doesn't have any shimmer just pure shine, a very light vanilla smell, can be worn beautifully by itself and goes perfectly over lipstick. Cons: a little sticky but transferring with a kiss not so bad because it's clear (guys look good with a little shine too). Longlasting? No. For me the pros outweigh the cons and at only $1.99 reapplying isn't a problem. Wishing you a bright and shiny weekend!

Haircut: Shoulder length

This cut is overwhelmingly popular right now. It seems like more and more celebrities are sporting this look everyday. I think many of them are getting tired of the hair extensions. Others are growing out their shorter bobs. The length is ideal on almost everybody and can be adapted to suite your face structure. You can get the length to sit right above, on, or right below the collar bone. A trend that is sure to win many hearts.

Monroe and West Monroe reviewed!

Going way off topic today but I saw this article in Design*Sponge (one of my daily reads). They actually did a city guide for Monroe and West Monroe! All I could think at the time was, "really?, really?". It was a very interesting choice and I'm honestly perplexed. I love the South but Monroe/West Monroe are not cities you would normally write about. I do think it's nice treat for all my readers living in that area. So check out the city guide, you may find some surprising treasures and places you already love.

I had a great time doing the makeup and hair for this photo shoot yesterday. KIM+PHIL decided to mix things up a bit and did the photo shoot in the home of the model, Julie. I love all the different textures in the background and how they're shown on camera. On the eyes, I tried some different and bolder techniques. Would you believe that in the few minutes we decided to go outside that's the only time it rained all day?! Kind of funny. After the shoot we ate dim sum for a late lunch, Phil's treat :D It was so delicious.
